New features in upcoming yaVDR 0.3: Sundtek driver support

We would like to give you an overview about some interesting new features in the upcoming yaVDR 0.3, starting today with describing how we included support for the Sundtek DVB USB stick driver.
Some members of our team depend on DVB-C for receiving digital TV. But the choice of DVB-C hardware is limited, especially when it comes to external devices. Then we discovered Sundtek MediaTV Pro. For an easy installation of the Sundtek stick, we have packaged the Sundtek driver in an Debian/Ubuntu package.
You can use the Sundtek stick in three different modes:
- DVB-C
- DVB-T
- Network mode
Installing the driver:
To keep it "simple" just type in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install yavdr-hardware-sundtek
Alternatively, with the upcoming yaVDR 0.3, you will also be able to install yaVDR related packages via the yaVDR-Webfrontend:
Just double click the red button next to a package to install it.
The Sundtek driver will be installed and an additional module for Sundtek configuration is visible within web frontend in the section "System". In there, just select the mode in which you would like to run your receiver and click "Apply Sundtek settings".
Finally, plugin the USB stick and press the button "Restart VDR" in Section "System/System Commands"
Upcoming yaVDR 0.3 should now recognize if the stick is "attached" or "removed". Important: Since VDR is not capable of "hot pluggin" (detecting DVB devices after the VDR daemon has started), the VDR start has to be delayed until the stick has been initialized.
yaVDR 0.3 will do this delay automatically on every boot.
S3 (Suspend to Ram) should work with the stick etc. etc.
What else?
- In future yaVDR releases, using multiple sticks and using netmode should be manageable over yaVDR Webfrontend.
- Sundtek has informed us that they plan to release DVB-S2 sticks in October 2010. So S2 support shouldn't be far away.
- Especially the Netmode is very interesting.
By the way: My future setup will look like this : :-)
[Update: The white box is a Seagate FreeAgent Dockstar with self installed Debian Linux on it. (Sadly, yaVDR aka Ubuntu 10.04 does not easily run on the Dockstar because Dockstar has an ARM5 platform..)]

@gda Die Dockstar als VDR-Server ist ja wirklich nett! Was benutzt Du dann als Client bzw. Ausgabegerät?

We are working on it. VDR 1.7.16 is running just fine on the Dockstar with debian squeeze. Currently I try to set it up with ubuntu maverick.

Ich hab bisher nur VDR 1.6 drauf laufen.
