We are very happy to announce the release of yaVDR 0.6.1. The ISO image can be downloaded via our download page as usual.
yaVDR 0.6.1 is the first bugfix/stability release to yaVDR 0.6.0 and should fix some slightly annoying problems with the kernel used during the installation and the Nvidia driver that affected a number of users. It also includes the latest packages updates and also the latest version of Kodi.
As explained on this blog a couple of days ago, we use this opportunity to provide you with a detailed overview over yaVDR 0.6.
Dear fans of yaVDR! Although it was quiet around this blog for the past one and a half years, let me tell you: Our project is still alive and we have some news for you. The good news is: We have managed to publish a new yaVDR 0.6.0 release based on Ubuntu 14.04 containing lots of updated VDR packages. The bad news is: We have failed to tell you about this in English language so far. But don't worry, we are making up for this now.
We are providing you with some updates in our Launchpad PPAs that you can install as package updates from the command line via apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade.
The basic idea behind a VDR distribution is to simplify the installation and configuration of a fairly complicated bunch of open source software components. To have more fun with it and more time to spend on extending its functionality with new features. Sadly, we were not the first to have that idea. In fact, we were far from being first.
Today is a special day: Exactly four years ago we have released the first version of our Ubuntu based VDR distribution: yaVDR 0.1. Within those four years we were able to publish five versions in total (not counting a couple of bug-fix releases). yaVDR installer images have been downloaded more than 75.000 times during this period of time. In fact, we just counted download number 77.777 a couple of days ago.
We want to use this anniversary as an opportunity to look back at the past four years and give you a little overview about what exactly happened during this time span.
In the past some of our users had problems installing yaVDR from USB sticks. If you belong to this group of frustrated users: Read on, we have good news for you!
Our users have informed us today that they are facing issues when installing yaVDR 0.5 from the ISO image. The installer stops at about 85% of the installation with an error message. We can reproduce these problems and now offer a new ISO image that corrects the issue.
Finally here it comes, expected for a long time, tested by a lot of volunteers, crafted by unresting developers and contributors:
yaVDR 0.5.0
If you've followed this blog or the multiple discussions at the VDR portal you may be familiar with the various changes that have been integrated into this new release. We did our very best as time permits to make it as stable as it can. Despite all testing there're some known issues which coudn't be solved. But they aren't "bad enough" to keep us from releasing the current status.
There is good news and bad news. Bad news first: On this blog, we have failed to inform you about all the exciting stuff that happened since the release of yaVDR 0.4 in October 2011. Shame on those of us who claim to be able to write regular blog postings in an adequate English... ;-) But now for the good news:
Without giving you any clue about the progress of our work on the next yaVDR version, we would like to announce the release of yavdr64-0.5.0-alpha1.iso today. The members of the yaVDR team are happy that the public can now join in with testing, improving and extending what we have been working on hard over the last eight months.
We are proud to announce yaVDR 0.4 after 12 months of hard work and two pre-releases.
Some basic facts about yaVDR 0.4 have been around for a while and are discussed in detail in some of our previous blog postings. A short summary should be sufficient:
yaVDR 0.4 is based on Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).
The ISO image is only available in 64bit flavour. However, our packages are also available as 32bit versions within our Launchpad repositories.
If you want to upgrade from an earlier yaVDR release to yaVDR 0.4 you will need to do a complete reinstall from scratch. You have to migrate your settings manually. This is often easier than it sounds.
You can download the yaVDR 0.4 ISO image from our downloads page.
But these were just the boring basics. Let's have a look at all the interesting details...
